Coromandel International Expands SEED (Sustainable Environment & Ecological Development) Initiative to Strengthen Gujarat’s Coastal Resilience
62,500 mangrove saplings planted in Ambheta village as part of multi-year bio-shield project
Dahej, March 09, 2025: Coromandel International Limited, a leading agri-solutions provider, has reaffirmed its commitment to ecology through the continued rollout of SEED – Sustainable Environment & Ecological Development – an ambitious bio-shield initiative under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program.
Now in its third year, the SEED project focuses on restoring vulnerable coastal ecosystems and mitigating climate risks through large-scale mangrove plantation. Since its launch in August 2023, the project has led to the successful planting of 62,500 mangrove saplings across 25 hectares of coastal land in Ambheta village, Vagra Taluka, Bharuch district. An impressive survival rate of over 89% has been achieved, with 55,500–56,000 saplings thriving on-site.
In the current phase (FY 2025 – 26), Coromandel plans to carry out gap-filling by planting an additional 6,500–7,000 saplings, ensuring complete coverage and a 100% survival rate. The maturing mangrove belt is designed to serve as a natural bio-shield, protecting the region from soil erosion, saline water ingress, and extreme weather events intensified by climate change. The initiative also fosters community engagement and economic empowerment.
Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Arun Leslie George, President and CHRO, Coromandel International, said, “The SEED initiative reflects our deep commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth. By combining ecological restoration with community involvement, we are building natural climate resilience while creating meaningful livelihood opportunities. This project embodies our belief in driving environmental stewardship through collaborative and future-focused action.”
Once matured, the mangrove bio-shield is expected to sequester up to 85% of carbon emissions in the project area and significantly reduce the risk of eutrophication supporting long-term ecological health and resilience along Gujarat’s coast.
